How to unlock Bootloader Samsung

The phone’s bootloader is a kind of code or a program that works to remind the operating system to enter the device in recovery mode or initialise the boot process. Once unlocked bootloader starts working as soon as you turn on the device. The device bootloader is feature that is available in every kind of device with an operating system like smartphones, tablets, pcs, etc. Since android has a very open-source nature, anybody can unlock the device bootloader very conveniently. Bootloader is usually locked in all phones to maintain system security issues. Also, the android OEMs don’t want to leave their skin and OS version which is in particularly designed and launched to be used in their own system models. This is the major reason why many OEMs don’t allow the feature of an unlocked bootloader in a straight manner. Though certain OEMs provides in-built bootloader unlocking tool.

Nevertheless, after the bootloader is enabled in the device, you can access features like flashing a third-party Custom ROM, Root, Mod files, Custom Recovery, and others. With these features you can easily make desired changes in the device. Also, note that the actual stock firmware is only to a certain boundary with customizations, and users may not able to access them thoroughly. On the other hand, after unlocking bootloader, users can enjoy many customization features for their android devices.

Also, if you want, even re-locking the bootloader is also possible. Some pros and cons of unlocking bootloader are:

Pros of Enabling Bootloader

  • For unlocking Custom ROMs
  • For downloading a Custom Recovery (TWRP)
  • For downloading Root access 

Cons of Enabling Bootloader

  • The device warranty can turn invalid.
  • Device performance can change.
  • Improper bootloader unlocking may cause improper controls in the device.
  • System privacy or security issues may arrise.
  • All the system data will clear from the memory.

Before we discuss the methods to unlock bootloader, let’s discuss Fastboot.

Fastboot Tool

Fastboot is a tool based on commands which can be accessed only in the bootloader or Fastboot mode. This tool is helpful in flashing Fastboot files or image files in the device. Other features available with it are recovering stock, unlocking bootloader, reseting phone data, and other commands.

Pre-Requirements:

The minimum system requirements needed to use Fastboot are:

  • a computer with required USB port. 
  • a USB wire.
  • minimum 60% battery.
  • The availability of ADB and Fastboot Tools in the device.
  • take a complete backup of the system.

Ways To Unlock Bootloader

Finally, given below are some of the measures that should be taken to unlock bootloader in the android devices.

  1. To Unlock Bootloader using computer (ADB & Fastboot)

Initialise by switching ‘Developer Options’ ON. To achieve that follow: –

  • Tap on ‘Settings’.
  • Scroll to ‘About Phone’ option.
  • Tap ‘About Phone’ option.
  • Find the ‘Build Number’ of the Android. It must be inside the tab titled ‘Version’.
  • Tap the ‘Build Number’ seven times.

This turns ON the ‘Developer Options’ in the android.

To enable OEM, unlock before proceeding:

  • Now, tap on ‘Settings’ again. 
  • Scroll to Developer options. 
  • Locate ‘OEM unlock’ under ‘Developer options’ drop-down list
  • Enable ‘OEM unlock’.

Finally unlock bootloader by following the given steps:

  • Now, enable ‘USB Debugging’. 
  • Connect the device with your PC using USB cable.
  • Download, extract and install ‘ADB & Fastboot’ zip file. 
  • Turn ‘OFF’ the phone.
  • Launch ‘Fastboot’ mode.
  • Now, navigate to ‘ADB & Fastboot’ folder, 
  • Press Shift Key + Right click. ‘Windows Command Prompt’ tab appears.
  • Type the command given below:

               adb devices

  • Hit ‘OK’ to allow USB Debugging on the device. 
  • Then Type: 

               adb reboot bootloader

  • Hit ‘Enter’. The android will run in bootloader mode.
  • Now type:

              fastboot devices

  • Hit ‘Enter’again.
  • The Fastboot number is now visible on the ‘ADB & Fastboot’ screen. Now, type:

               fastboot oem unlock

  • To turn ON the android, type: 

               fastboot reboot

  • Hit ‘OK’.

Finally, the device will reboot into unlocking bootloader. 

  1. To Unlock Bootloader without using PC (Flashify and similar apps)

Flashify is one of those software made to act as the Samsung bootloader unlock tool.  Through this method you can unlock bootloader without using PC.

To Install the Application: –

Download and launch ‘Flashify’ on the device using google Play Store

To Enter into Recovery Mode: – 

  • Now, that the app has been downloaded, you will find three options listed in the app.
  • Zip File
  • Recovery Image
  • Boot Image

             Select ‘Recovery Image’. 

  • Download the TWRP Recovery.
  • After download TWRP file, select that file and hit ‘OK’. 
  • Finally, reboot the device manually.
  • Press and hold Power + Volume down button to run the device through the Recovery Mode. 
  1. To unlock bootloader with Vaultkeeper Method 

This way is suitable only when the android came along with Android 9.0 Pie or above.

Initialise by switching ‘Developer Options’ ON. To achieve that follow: –

  • Tap on ‘Settings’.
  • Scroll to ‘About Phone’ option.
  • Tap ‘About Phone’ option.
  • Locate the ‘Build Number’ of the Android. It must be inside the tab titled ‘Version’.
  • Tap the ‘Build Number’ seven times.

This turns ON the ‘Developer Options’ in the android.

To Enable OEM, Unlock Before Proceeding: –

  • Now, tap on ‘Settings’ again. 
  • Scroll to Developer options. 
  • Locate ‘OEM unlock’ under ‘Developer options’ drop-down list
  • Enable ‘OEM unlock’.
  • Now, to boot the device into the Download mode follow as directed below:
  • Turn off the Power of the android.
  • Press and hold “Home + Power + Volume down” buttons together until the warning message appear on the screen.
  • Press Volume up key. 

The device is now in download mode.

To Unlock Bootloader via Download Mode: –

  • Keep pressing the Volume Up switch for a while to open Device unlock mode.
  • Push the Volume Up switch to reply the confirmation message. Wait for some time for the process to finish. After it is done the device will automatically turn on.

To verify that the unlocking has been done via the Vaultkeeper mechanism: –

  • Open ‘Settings’.
  • Scroll to ‘Developer Options’. 
  • Locate ‘OEM unlock’.
  • Verify that the ‘OEM Unlock’ is still toggled on or not.

As we have seen the ways to unlock bootloader are simpler than imagined. The only major disadvantage which can really cause harm to the system is the fact that after you unlock bootloader all of the data, files, folders that you must have stored in the device will clear out completely from the system. So, to avoid this remember to save a complete backup of all the important things in the memory of the phone. This data can be restored later. Also remember that while unlocking bootloader do not play with the controls as that can cause enabling wrong settings in the system. Prefer the method which do not require a PC or a laptop as that method is much simpler than others and will decrease the chances of setting corrupt controls.
